The Joy of Doing it Yourself

| June 9, 2009 | 2 Comments

Call me mistrustful, but there is something so comforting about knowing exactly what you’re eating. Knowing that the ruby red plum you’re about to sink your teeth into was able to grow on a tree until it was ready to be plucked and taken to the market. Knowing that the bread that you feed your family is made with only whole ingredients and none of that sneaky corn syrup or hydrogenated oils.

I guess you could also call it curiosity – I just want to know, can I make this? This spring I told myself that I was going to conquer my number one kitchen fear – yeast. The fact that there are active cultures involved just paralyzed me – what if I killed them!? I did, in fact, do just that last week and (foolishly) made the bread anyway, hoping beyond hope that perhaps the yeast would have pity on me and come back to life. While the bread turned out quite tasty, it had the consistency of a hockey puck and was quickly distributed to the rabbits and squirrels in the park across the street. Not to be easily dissuaded I tried again this weekend – success! And for those of you looking for the recipe for this fantastic looking and tasting bread, check out this link: http://www.cookingbread.com/recipes/classics_bread/fabulous_french_bread_recipe.html

That is a gorgeous loaf, Elyssa! Congrats! The last time I made bread, the inside wasn’t completely cooked through! Disgusting!

It always seems that my breads, no matter how many times I make them, turn out good, but slightly different each time :)
I’m funny about eating things I am not sure of, whether it be foods that I am not sure of regarding their origin or things that folks make and bring to, say, potlucks. My kids use to go to church potlucks and only eat the food we brought because they didn’t know what ingrediants were involved in the “is that meat in there or ???” !!
