Heaven on Earth & Pie in the Sky

While we might not be native to New England, it sure does feel like ‘home’ to us.

Cape II

Every summer, thousands of people and families (native and non-native) flock to Cape Cod to enjoy what millions before them have: warm breezes billowing in from somewhere in the Atlantic, bike rides along the picturesque waterfront, the feel of smooth, exfoliating sand beneath one’s feet, picnics on rickety boats, the quiet, crisp and calming rustle of the trees, frosty beers on back decks and the symphony of crickets, rhythmically chirping in the balmy evenings…

Heaven on earth?  You bet.

Currently, we (as well as the Obamas – although, we haven’t managed to run into them yet) are vacationing on the Cape.  To say that we’re having an incredible time is an absolute understatement.   Unlike prior vacations, we have, essentially, done nothing particularly noteworthy.  Most days involve a leisurely stroll into ‘town’ (there is no stop light in town – just one main street) for breakfast, a ride in the red Radio Flyer wagon to the beach, lounging on the deck and, of course, cooking and/or eating from one of the handful of top-notch dining establishments.

The gastronomical highlight of our day has got to be popovers and pecan sticky buns from Pie in the Sky, a tradition we instituted upon arrival.  Pie in the Sky is something of an institution in this little town as the locals and summer crew are loyal customers and avid supporters of the business and its concept.  The tiny café and bakery boasts 100% fair trade and organic coffees and an extraordinary assortment of aromatic, made-from-scratch pastries and breads.  The selection is mind-boggling and the heavily fragrant air swirls with the smell of freshly baked brioche, blueberry scones and whatever else your heart desires….

Most customers pick up their delectables and make their way to Martha’s Vineyard via ferry, go to work in one of the marine and geological laboratories or head to the beach.  That is exactly what we do.  After breakfast, we slowly (stomachs protruding with carbohydrate overload) make our way to the beach, which involves a trek up a massive and intense hill.  As much as I dislike huffing and puffing my way up that mountain of an incline, it is worth the walk for two reasons:  1) we burn off the gluttony, threatening to settle around our waists and 2) we have the very good fortune of inhaling salty seawater mist as we stretch and sink ourselves into the warm sand and hazy sun…

About the Author (Author Profile)

We all have a friend in our lives who is smart, witty, intelligent: you give her cold pasta and chicken and she will whip out a gourmet meal in 15 minutes, she makes chicken soup from scratch for her sick neighborhood even though she is nursing a cold herself… you know that friend who will always be there to drive common sense into you, but doesn’t realize that she is as perfect as they come as a mother, wife and friend. That is our Patty….
