Dancing Dimsum

DSC_0016

I love dim sum. LOVE it! But I never could quite figure out how to make the little packages…they look so dainty and scrumptious. So I gave the famous shu mai a try. Shu mai are typically steamed pork and shrimp tucked in thin wrappers. I tried mine with ground turkey. It was far easier than I had imagined so thought I would share!

dimsum

Turkey Shu Mai
1 lb ground turkey
8 shrimp (peeled, chopped into small pieces)
1/2 TB ginger, chopped
1/2 TB scallion, minced
1 TB sesame oil
2 TB soy sauce
Pepper
1/4 tsp chicken bouillon
1/2 TB corn starch
1/2 TB egg
Salt
Wonton wrappers (round)1. Mix everything together in food processor and put in the refrigerator for 20 minutes;
2. Put about one TB of filling in each wrapper. Wet the wrapper and gather up the sides and twist, leaving the center open.
3. Place lettuce leaves for parchment paper in bamboo steamers. Steam for about 8-10 minutes until done.
I think I’ll add a bit more kick in mine next time.

You can make your dim sum dance too…one of my favorite sites, Serious Eats, had this most awesome post. Just like the buns that used to keep me quiet for hours as a kid.

  1. I think your shui mai look fine, especially because it’s your first time. I needed quite some time until I could finally make some more presentable dumplings…!

ohmygoodness, the shumai looks scrumptous. I like the ground turkey idea! Super creative, espectially for an intro-to-chinese food eater…..but as an avid/advanced Chinese food eater, give me the shrimp and pork stuffed shu mai anytime!

Also, pictures look great, B. Nice.
