All The Single Ladies: Hot Chocolate

| January 3, 2010

My husband took my older daughter (3 years old) to see the recent Chipmunk (Alvin, Simon and Theodore – remember them?) movie at the theatre.  Upon their return, my daughter came bouncing in through the door with her hips rapidly ticking to the left and right as she blared out a version of Beyonce’s “All the Single Ladies.

Cuz if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it
Don’t be mad once you see that he want it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it

wo oh ooh oh oh ooh oh oh ooh oh oh oh

In the film, the song, which is an adrenaline pumping, shout-out to all the hot blooded, powerful and liberated single-ladies in the universe, is sung by the super cute Chipettes.  If you are interested in having your spirits lifted, I highly recommend you visit this link to see the incredible Chipettes in action.

So, I cringed a little when I heard my daughter singing the song (on repeat).  The song’s message is hardly something we want our daughter to concern herself with EVER, much less at the ripe old age of 3.  But I couldn’t help be amazed at how the song’s rhythmic hand clapping and heart thumping, bassy drumbeat could affect her so much.  The song had uplifted her tiny, little 3-year-old heart and soul, putting her in an ultra giddy, fantasmical and almost stratospheric mood.  As far as my daughter was concerned, she was a member of the Chipettes and an uber feminist of the 21st century – a so-called “Single Lady.”

Before the family walked in, I was in the middle of making them some homemade hot chocolate.  What better way to top off a movie date with dad and a good mood, to boot?  This concoction is so rich that it really is more like drinkable, melted dark chocolate with hints of vanilla, cinnamon and orange.  If you want to do something really special for that beloved adult in your life, you could add a teaspoon (or more) of some orange liquor, or even dark rum (yum).  We kept it kosher in the house for our after movie treat.

Zomppa’s Hot Chocolate

Hot Chocolate
Serves 1 large cup or 2 small cups

3 ounces of dark chocolate, roughly chopped
1 dried, orange peel (optional)
1 cinnamon stick
1-½ cups of milk (whole is best!)
2 tablespoons of brown sugar

In a saucepan over low heat, add the milk, orange peel, cinnamon stick and brown sugar.  Do not boil!  Just let warm up (when you see bubbles forming around the edges, you are in good shape).  Let warm up for about 5 minutes.

Add the chocolate and whisk until the chocolate melds with the milk.  Whisk over heat until slightly frothy.  Take off heat and enjoy!  Add marshmallows!

We all have a friend in our lives who is smart, witty, intelligent: you give her cold pasta and chicken and she will whip out a gourmet meal in 15 minutes, she makes chicken soup from scratch for her sick neighborhood even though she is nursing a cold herself… you know that friend who will always be there to drive common sense into you, but doesn’t realize that she is as perfect as they come as a mother, wife and friend. That is our Patty….
