The Color of Food: TidBit of the Day

We’ve talked a lot about inequity in access to healthy food in the U.S. and abroad, but what about inequity in the food system, that is the production, processing, distribution, and service of food? Do you think race in the U.S. plays a role in food service workers and producers?

The Applied Research Center, a think tank that examines racial justice through media and research, recently published an insightful study, “The Color of Food.”

You can download the report here. Their key findings:

  • People of color who work in the food chain make less than Caucasians
  • Fewer people of color hold food management positions
  • People of color working in the food chain are concentrated in low-wage jobs
