Adult Desserts: Strawberry-Watermelon Popsicles & Champagne

Remember popsicles?

When was the last time you had a popsicle?  One of those sticky, succulent, sweet and refreshing icons most generally associated with summertime heat and good times?  My sister and I had a popsicle at least once a day during the summer.  With the cacophonous sounds of crickets chirping in our backyard and the hazy orange-red sun settling into the horizon, my sister and I would steadily slurp on our sticky-sweet treats, hoping we could catch the popsicle drips before they oozed all over our chins and palms.

Sigh.  Those were the days….

At some point, I stopped eating/enjoying a good old-fashioned popsicle.  I can’t remember the exact age at which the popsicle became obsolete in my world, but I suspect it was sometime before I hit the age of 13.

It was then that I reluctantly understood that sucking on a popsicle as a full grown adult was slightly inappropriate…maybe even a little obscene.  Anytime I think of someone licking/sucking on a popsicle, the scene usually involves an extraordinarily gorgeous female performing tongue acrobatics with a red (most likely strawberry flavored) popsicle.   Somehow, overnight, I understood that the popsicle was synonymous with sex.

How did this happen??  I doubt I am the only one who feels a little ‘dirty’ when it comes to enjoying a popsicle.   When was the last time you sucked on a popsicle in public?  Outside the privacy of your own home?  Years, right?  Maybe decades?  Yes, same here.

When did it become inappropriate for adults to suck on popsicles?  More importantly, why did this happen?   Sure, the popsicle is ever so slightly phallic in nature, but so is the cucumber?  Why don’t I have the same strange, big-brother-is-watching-you effect when I chomp down on a cumber??  Hummm….

In any case, I am here to tell you that popsicles are very much retro-chic and that you should not be deterred by whatever inhibitions you’ve been conditioned to harbor.  These Strawberry-Watermelon popsicles served with champagne are an excellent summertime treat for any and all adults.  Minus the champagne, they are an excellent and nutritious mid-day pick–me-up on a hot summers day.

Strawberry-Watermelon Popsicles in Champagne

1 pint of strawberries

½ a watermelon

1 Bottle of Champagne (optional)

Directions:

Blend, in a blender, the strawberries and watermelon.

Pour into popsicle molds and follow mold instructions.

Once completely froze, place popsicles in wine glasses wide enough to  fit the popsicles and pour in champagne.  I used the cheap kind of champagne, but feel free to use the more expense stuff!

We all have a friend in our lives who is smart, witty, intelligent: you give her cold pasta and chicken and she will whip out a gourmet meal in 15 minutes, she makes chicken soup from scratch for her sick neighborhood even though she is nursing a cold herself… you know that friend who will always be there to drive common sense into you, but doesn’t realize that she is as perfect as they come as a mother, wife and friend. That is our Patty….

Someone got us those freeze in 5 minutes Popsicle makers as a gift, and they are awesome! I don’t know that I could have justified buying the Zoku on my own, but I am obsessed with it now. Great for adult pops (we have a recipe for sangria ones- yum!) and for fresh fruit kid pops too. Definitely worth looking at.
