Can you believe that Sol Food Mobile Farm is going to hit the road in TWO days? The intrepid team: Dylan, Eliza, Ellen, and Reid (our heroes) have been hard at work, and oh my, oh my, the bus is looking amazing!!
To give you a sense of what Sol Food has achieved so far, a few highlights:
- Lead sustainability workshop at NC School of Math & Science
- Build community garden at Durham School of Arts
- Teach cooking and nutrition class for Cooking Matters with Kids
Not only are Reid’s tomato plants growing like crazy on the back of the bus (with baby cukes up the ceiling), but they have installed gutters and flexible downspouts to collect rainwater. That’s right, they can collect rainwater and have potable water on the bus (hint: if I were a company, I would make sure to hire these guys as soon as they come back from their trip, they’re amazing). They can now carry 30 gallons of double filtered water for the mobile greenhouse and kitchen sink (which, of course, is on board).
New storage units are in place, and they’ve even put in shades in the colors of the five elements: Earth, Water, Wind, Air, and Fire…what don’t they think of?
Huge news is that they are completely energy independent! On top of the roof (in addition to the rooftop garden) are peel and stick solar panels. With a new battery bank with 10 hours of power storage, all their onboard appliances and electronics will be happily sun-powered.
To continue this journey, we need your help! If you are passionate about good food, healthy planet, and clean energy, please consider showing your support – big or small!
