Introducing Hoi Ning & Philly Food & Friends

| June 18, 2012 | 5 Comments

We are excited to introduce Zomppa Hoi Ning! She will be writing the monthly column, Philly Food & Friends (PFF)…read more about this intrepid explorer and lover of food!

Hoi Ning is a lover of all things delectable. She will try almost anything once, though twice is pushing it for some things! She is an adventurous lifelong learner, with a penchant for challenging the norm and pushing the envelope. She loves to ask questions, hear stories, and remember details. With food, she is passionate about sweets, especially gourmet ice cream and artisanal chocolates. Her motto is: “Life’s too short” — so she tries to live life with no regrets. That said, the plan is to end up in Paris for every fifth birthday going forward. Her favorite cities are ones that make her feel at home: Paris, Melbourne, Seattle, Philadelphia, Berlin. She likes to stretch and be stretched — mentally, physically, emotionally. And she believes work and play can ultimately be interchangeable.

Philly Food & Friends (PFF, for those of you who like to keep things simple) will explore the ever-expanding food culture in the City of Brotherly Love. While some folks may still associate Philly with the bygone days of grit and grime, this column is here to show you how far the city has come, particularly in terms of what it, its residents, and its restaurants have to offer food lovers. Not only is Philly resplendent with food options, the city is also at the forefront of challenging traditional notions about what it means to eat — and eat well. This is a key time for the city to be engaging residents and visitors alike in a dynamic conversation about and around food — and PFF is here to give Zomppa readers access and insight into that conversation.

Philadelphia is a foodie paradise, and I have the thrill of living right in the heart of it. When I moved out here in 2010, I knew that the city was in love with food. Little did I know how broadly and deeply this love would grow — even within a span of two years. And little did I know how exciting it would be for me to get swept up in this exciting and whirlwind romance.

In my inaugural piece, I want to share a little bit about myself. First things first, I adore ice cream. As you might be able to tell from my profile pic, I’m intensely infatuated with this creamy confection. I can literally have it for every meal of the day. And lest you think I’m picky and particular, I love ice cream in all flavors, forms, shapes, and sizes — ice cream, sorbet, frozen yogurt, gelato, sorbetto, frozen custard, soft serve, hand-scooped, cups, cones, milkshakes, sundaes, cake, pie…. Well, you get the point.

Stay tuned tomorrow for one of the best intersections in Philly for…ice cream!
