For years, Washington, DC’s Chinatown looked a little sad. With Starbuck’s and Urban Outfitters creeping it, it didn’t seem like there were many Chinese places, much less Asian food left, except for a few holdouts (no, Urban Outfitters written in Chinese doesn’t count).

Things seem to be changing, and finally, bubble tea that offers steamed pork buns and and bahn mi’s. Pho DC, specializing in Vietnamese and French-Vietnamese, opened up a little take-away deli that offers these pan-Asian treats. It’s kinda hip and simple.

Why didn’t you tell me about this place when I was there in May???
The bubble tea looks great. Yeah, it’ll be kinda sad if there’s no Chinese food in China Town.
Pho DC sounds like a fun place to eat.
I love the texture of the tapioca pearls mixed with the milk or juice teas. It’s the combination of beverage and a snack food that makes bubble tea such a unique and yummy treat! This tidbit makes me want to return to Pho DC sometime soon!
So I stopped at this place on my way home to get a bean bun and what I thought was a tofu bahn mi. Got home and opened it up and a piece of chicken was sticking out. I took it back and told the guy it had chicken in it and he told me they use “imitation chicken” in addition to tofu, which makes no sense. Luckily the other guy who was working the register the first time was outside having a smoke and I asked him if they used imitation chicken. Of course he looked at me as if I was talking crazy and said he would make me another one. He did and I took it home, only to find it had chicken and tofu in it. Obviously they use chicken because it is cheaper than tofu and tastes “better” but I will never go there again and am seriously considering taking back the chicken, which is definitely chicken (fake chicken does not have fat and sinew in it), and ask the manager for a refund and apology, but I don’t know if I care that much. Don’t go there if you want to get what is on the menu in your sandwich and definitely not if you are no meat or vegetarian person like me.
