Sol Food Mobile Farm Days 8-10: Virginia to Maryland

| July 9, 2012 | 1 Comment

On June 30, our bus is stopped in Bethesda, Maryland for the DC Central Market. This Saturday farmers market is an awesome stop for anyone who finds themselves in the local area and is in need of tons of fresh produce, local chocolate and even homemade cupcakes. We had an eventful morning of bus tours and walks through the greenhouse. We have also met local farmers at all of the surrounding stands and learned about the local food movement here in the capitol area. Everyone has been more than gracious to us and we have collected a variety of donated food goods to the bus.

Some of the highlights include an Italian loaf of bread, goat cheese, fresh salad greens, onions, purple sweet peppers, cupcakes and pole beans. We will be eating so well over the next few days. Many thanks to Mike Berliner and all of the other great folks with the DC Central Market!

Bethesda Farmer’s Market

Attendance at last week’s farmers market was lower than expected given the massive power outages around the Bethesda and DC area. That night, our bus weathered the first major thunderstorm of its career! High winds and heavy rains swept across the east coast throughout the night, leaving the Bethesda city streets covered with storm debris. Over one million people lost power here in the area and the death toll is rising in surrounding areas due to downed trees and power lines. Our best wishes go out to those affected by the storms and we feel lucky to have been safe in our bus home!

Our travels over the last few days have been extensive and we started to settle into the pace of living life “on the road”. On Thursday night, we drove through the wee hours of the morning, trucking our way north out of the farm lands of western NC and into Bedford, VA. We spent a day in Bedford with a dear friend and had the opportunity to expo the bus to friends and neighbors. The Bedford newspaper even came out to cover the morning and we look forward to reading the article soon.

Now that we have made it up to the DC area, we are beginning to feel the cultural shift in both people and foods. It is exciting to be in new and unexplored territory for us and we are looking forward to our week ahead in Baltimore! Stay tuned for more adventures as we travel further north this week.
