A Mindful Carnivore by Tovar Cerulli

| November 15, 2012

A fascinating and well-crafted read for omnivores, vegetarians, and vegans alike. Tovar Cerulli grew up hunting.

Then he became a vegetarian. And then, a vegan. For many, many, many years. Until his doctor advised him that his body needed to get some animal protein, and he slowly began to incorporate meat back into his diet. He also takes up his love for hunting, having to reconcile his beliefs in ecological conservation and animal welfare with his body’s needs and his love for hunting. Cerulli explores with depth and nuance the motivations of omnivores and vegans alike, the role of death in both the killing of animals for food and the growing of organic vegetables for sustenance.
