Not quite sure how we missed this one by Mark Bittman last fall, so just in case you also missed it, we thought we would post this rather compelling chart that proves the fact that a healthy diet is not something only the elite can afford.

In his article Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?, Bittman breaks down all the various arguments (or shall we say excuses) around healthy eating and clearly spells out all the cheaper healthier alternatives people could be eating instead of highly processed foods.

We are excited to introduce Zomppa Hoi Ning! She will be writing the monthly column, Philly Food & Friends (PFF)…read more about this intrepid explorer and lover of food!

Hoi Ning is a lover of all things delectable. She will try almost anything once, though twice is pushing it for some things! She is an adventurous lifelong learner, with a penchant for challenging the norm and pushing the envelope. She loves to ask questions, hear stories, and remember details. With food, she is passionate about sweets, especially gourmet ice cream and artisanal chocolates. Her motto is: “Life’s too short” — so she tries to live life with no regrets. That said, the plan is to end up in Paris for every fifth birthday going forward. Her favorite cities are ones that make her feel at home: Paris, Melbourne, Seattle, Philadelphia, Berlin. She likes to stretch and be stretched — mentally, physically, emotionally. And she believes work and play can ultimately be interchangeable.

Philly Food & Friends (PFF, for those of you who like to keep things simple) will explore the ever-expanding food culture in the City of Brotherly Love. While some folks may still associate Philly with the bygone days of grit and grime, this column is here to show you how far the city has come, particularly in terms of what it, its residents, and its restaurants have to offer food lovers. Not only is Philly resplendent with food options, the city is also at the forefront of challenging traditional notions about what it means to eat — and eat well. This is a key time for the city to be engaging residents and visitors alike in a dynamic conversation about and around food — and PFF is here to give Zomppa readers access and insight into that conversation.

Philadelphia is a foodie paradise, and I have the thrill of living right in the heart of it. When I moved out here in 2010, I knew that the city was in love with food. Little did I know how broadly and deeply this love would grow — even within a span of two years. And little did I know how exciting it would be for me to get swept up in this exciting and whirlwind romance.

In my inaugural piece, I want to share a little bit about myself. First things first, I adore ice cream. As you might be able to tell from my profile pic, I’m intensely infatuated with this creamy confection. I can literally have it for every meal of the day. And lest you think I’m picky and particular, I love ice cream in all flavors, forms, shapes, and sizes — ice cream, sorbet, frozen yogurt, gelato, sorbetto, frozen custard, soft serve, hand-scooped, cups, cones, milkshakes, sundaes, cake, pie…. Well, you get the point.

Stay tuned tomorrow for one of the best intersections in Philly for…ice cream!

We know, another Zomppa whose name begins with ‘K.’ Nonetheless, we are so excited that Katherine is coming on as a contributor. Katherine’s engagement with Zomppa has been tremendous – she sits on our Board and was the one who helped us with our legal paperwork. She is not only a talented attorney, but a passionate cook and eater. Welcome, Katherine, we’re looking forward to your food thoughts!

As soon as Katherine was tall enough, she was peering over the kitchen counter watching her mom make Three Cup Chicken or lotus root soup. She grew up making potstickers, scallion pancakes, and winter solstice dumplings with her entire family; to this day, the kitchen is still the most popular room in her house. If Katherine isn’t lawyering or bouldering, you can find Katherine in her kitchen sleepily wondering why she waited until 11PM to start rising bread dough.

Ok, so I first heard of CommentLuv some 6 months ago when our blogger friend in Uruguay, Gera @sweetsfoodsstarted raving about it. I favorited his review about it, CommentLuv Premium Plugin Review: 7 Reasons Why this Plugin Rocks, and made a mental note “must go back and read all about this WordPress plugin for comments when I have a moment”. Fast-forward over 5 months and I finally found that moment!

I am happy to announce on behalf of the Zomppa team that CommentLuv has now been activated on this site. For those of you not familiar with what on earth I am talking about, this is very much a give and take feature in the comment sections of blogs and websites where everyone gets to be a winner really. It helps to build links and traffic to and from websites. Here is the basic lowdown:

This is a special premium plugin for self-hosted WordPress sites

It is really 8 plugins in one so if you know anything about WordPress sites, you know that the fewer the plugins you install on your website, the lesser the chances of miscommunications between plugins and also with WordPress itself.

It basically eradicates spam on comments

When fellow bloggers comment on an article of ours now, they can include a link back to a recent post of theirs. This helps build-up their list of backlinks to the site, and we get to help promote your material.

When we comment on other CommentLuv enabled sites, we also got to do point 4 on other blogs which in turn will help drive traffic to our site.

There are additional features which you can activate on the plugin that allow people leaving comments to also include keywords of theirs and also share the fact that they have left a comment on your site on other social media channels.

Essentially, you will now notice we have a little CommentLuv icon at the bottom of our comment sections. If you put in your details and your website address, the options to backlink to one of your last 10 posts will then come up.

I could go on about this more, but really, for a full review on the plugin, do check out Gera’s very comprehensive review CommentLuv Premium Plugin Review: 7 Reasons Why this Plugin Rocks. We have only had it active on our site for about a week now, and look forward to playing around with it some more and see how it starts to affect our traffic and also that of our readers. So, if you are already using CommentLuv on your blog, come join us! If you are not, consider joining in, I guess!

We are so excited to introduce our newest Zomppa, Mila! Mila brings an incredible wealth of knowledge about a healthy, holistic, mindful approach to eating and living well. She also brings a fun and funky approach to exploring food, from the streets of DC to the streets of Liberia. Welcome, Mila!

Mila grew up in a house surrounded by great cooks and bold flavors. For many years, she excelled at baking, but was content to leave most of the savory food preparation in the skilled hands of others. Her brother is a wizard in the kitchen and has since gone on to become a professional chef.

Although her love affair with food started early in life, she didn’t realize how much fun cooking with vegetables could be until she started hanging out at the Ithaca farmer’s market and trading recipe secrets with the people who brought food from the farm to the table. Her motto is: “I’ll try anything twice” because once is simply not enough. Her years spent traveling as an International Development analyst began a love affair with “street food,” which has led her to sample exotic flavors from kitchens found in the unlikeliest of places. Her more recent foray into management consulting has only added any analytical bent to her thirst for foodie fun. When she’s not constructing Gantt charts or tweaking Harvey Balls at her day job, she can be found shopping at the farmers market, conducting amateur “comparative analyses” of local food trucks and ethnic eateries, and dreaming up new ways to prepare the simple, rustic foods that she loves.

We are absolutely delighted to introduce Zomppa’s first Digital Media and Research Intern! We were blown away by Madelyn’s passion and experience, and are looking forward to her contributions to the team. In addition to her behind-the-scenes work, keep an eye out for her upcoming column. Welcome, Madelyn!

Springing from a background in sexuality and gender, Madelyn uses an intersectional eco-feminist lens to interpret the world around her. As a passionate – newly vegan, amateur activist – photographer, she hopes to add an interesting perspective to Zomppa’s dialogue on food thought, policy and fun as its first intern. While she isn’t bouncing between classes on her college campus, she is found snuggling up to a good book with her cats or planning a new garden project.

You can find Madelyn’s photos and contributions at Rachel in Veganland and The Carrboro Citizen.
