Heifer began a WiLD initiative 22 years ago “to address gender equity issues, and to enable women to care for themselves and by extension their families and the Earth.” WiLD stands for Women in Livestock Development, and founded on the belief that women have the moxie and the grace to make change happen.

Day 33. Are we there yet? Find out at: www.elcaminoylacomida.com.  Did you know that there are folks who have found their mates on El Camino? After all, if sharing bathrooms and wearing the same two shirts for over a month doesn’t cut out the small talk, I’m not sure what will.

Heifer makes it easy for couples to create a Heifer Gift Registry. Instead of getting two sets of creamers that you will never use (admit it, you won’t even use one), you can have  family and friends donate animals in your honor.

By now, we hope that you have learned a bit more about Heifer and the great work it does to reduce hunger and poverty while caring for the planet. If you are more organized than we are, then consider creating a team fundraising effort through Team Heifer. By recruiting family and friends, you can raise money for Heifer by doing all sorts of great things – bike across the country or an inter-departmental competition at your office.

Day 31 of the Way. It’s amazing how a month goes by and we haven’t spent much money other than food and shelter, and yet, not wanting for much (other than hot, private showers and toilets. One can dream!)  For up-to-date news and photos of the journey, please go to: www.elcaminoylacomida.com.

Heifer International obviously depends on donors and people who want to pass on the gift of self-sufficiency. However, the Heifer Foundation also supports the organization by growing and overseeing its endowment. The Foundation also created an online sustainable giving initiative known as the Hope Equity as a way for donors to build the endowments they support while receiving accurate reporting on the growth and use of their gifts. Through this and smart fiscal management, Heifer enables a little bit to go a long way.

Month 2. Day 30. For up-to-date news and photos of the journey, please go to: www.elcaminoylacomida.com.  Summer is a great time to read, and we are fortunate to have e-Readers with us (don’t laugh, carrying a 200-page book is not cool, hasn’t been since Day 2).

To encourage children to read and make a difference, Heifer has a summer library reading program. In addition to free posters, bookmarks, stickers, and games on their website, there is also the Read to Feed™ program. Read to Feed™ offers reading incentives for free and is also home to a resource library of its own published books, such as “Beatrice’s Goat” that tells how a girl from Uganda achieved her wish to go to school through a gift of a goat and other book recommendations.

Heifer International offers another way to experience the outdoors that also empowers people to make a difference to end hunger and poverty. The Learning Center at Heifer Ranch is also a farm that has gardens and animals, such as water buffalo, camels and traditional farm animals such as pigs, goats and more.
